The perils of online advertising

I just clicked through from the TV One homepage to read a news story about the latest Malaysian Airlines tragedy and couldn't believe what was playing to the right of the main article (a fully animated mid-air target and destroy animation), captured in this screenshot below:

Whether or not this very badly timed ad placement could be avoided (it's impossible for a website visitor to know whether it's been booked and scheduled by the TV network or is simply being filled by Google's massive display advertising network), and I know it's a Sunday, it would be wise for the network to pull it immmediately, even if it means their valuable ad space remains empty.

The appearance of this ad shocked me; I can't possibly imagine the distress it would cause to family and friends of Mary and Gerry Mencke.

Off we go with 'War Thunder'? I don't think so.

I am guessing Twitter will be the fastest way to get this message to the powers that be, but out of curiousity I will also try Facebook and the contact form. Let's see what happens…

Update [21/7/14] – TV One responded at 9am this morning, advising they would get the ad blocked immediately. Nice one – an appropriate and timely response! Incidentally, I got the response via Facebook.
